Well, it's been about a month since Aric, Bobby, and Wes convinced me to change to Ubuntu from XP on my laptop. The change has been worth it. How so? Let me list off the reasons:
- My battery will charge more often. Since the change, I have kept nearly a full battery charge. With XP, it was a crapshoot.
- I have much of the same operations that I got with Windows. I can IM, Flickr, use the Internet, wired or wireless. There's not much I could only do on Windows. The exception would be iTunes. That's not too hard to fix. My desktop still has Windows on it. All I have to do is burn my paid iTunes songs to CD and then rip them to mp3s on this computer.
- Using JAVA is not a hassle. As I told Aric yesterday, when I used JAVA on my XP set up, I'd fall asleep before my JAVA Applet would load and work. Okay, I'm exaggerating on that. However, JAVA working on Ubuntu is a lot faster than on XP. The only difference? Operating Systems. The hardware is all the same.
- I don't have to reboot as often when I update files. I think after downloading updates, I've had to reboot my computer once. With Windows, with the number of updates I did do in the past month, I would have rebooted about 5 times. Much nicer.
Aric told me I should try out Beryl by looking at some YouTubing some videos. I downloaded it this morning. I wish I could take a screen shot video of it, but I haven't figured that stuff out, yet. However, here's a short video from YouTube that shows Beryl working on Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn:
I like what I have done so far. I've got an interesting setup that is all me. ![]()
I've been proud of myself with what I have done with Ubuntu. Okay, so I needed Aric to get AMP installed. Now that's done, I shouldn't have too much problem with MySQL server and PHP scripting I'll need to do this summer. I've also installed some stuff on my own on this computer: XMMS, Google Earth, Picasa, Pidgin, Real Player, JAVA Virtual Console, and Beryl, to name a few. I even had Aric fooled into thinking I had Winamp on this because XMMS lets you use Winamp skins on it. ![]()
Next Saturday, the local Linux users group is having a meeting. One of their members invited the ACM members to last month's and future meetings. I missed last month's meeting. I think I'll go next week. It never hurts to broaden your horizons.
Besides, we don't really learn anything Linux related in the IT program.
It's quite depressing if I think about.
Speaking of school, I did make the Dean's List for the Spring Semester. Time for the Shuttle Launch.

I did see them when they came to Armstrong 3 years ago. It was a major act coming to Savannah and my school. I took my younger sibs and one of Beth's friends. I do have their Songs About Jane album, but I got that free at a special movie premier I won tickets to. Other than that, I'm not a big fan.
However, I love the new single, "Makes Me Wonder." It like how it's a pop song, but with a bite. It drops a few f-bombs in it, but the word works.
I guess the line "Give me something to believe in / Cause I don't believe in you" hits close to home. I once believe in someone; that was a mistake. I have other things to do and believe in now. You live and learn.
Here's the video, minus the f-bombs:

Onesome: Just-- in time for summer vacation? Are you there yet? Another week to go? Does it matter (to the moms with little ones and the eight to five crowd)? Just curious how things are across American and around the world... I just had a trip to Seattle and Tacoma followed by 2 weeks of vegging out at home. If I go on any other vacations this summer, it will probably either a small trip to the Space Center in Florida, Charleston, or the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia. It all depends.
Twosome: in-- times of crisis, what do you do to chill out a bit? Talk to someone? ...take a walk? ...eat a gallon of Ben and Jerry's? Read a book? I TotalFark.
Or I play a game. This vacation has been spent playing plenty of Tetris.
Threesome: case--by case? Do you have a carry case for everything that has one available and keep them all populated? ...or do you just stuff gadgetry into whatever is handy when you need to lug it along somewhere? It depends on the thing that needs a case. CDs I burn, no. CDs with software, I try to keep in a certain box. My laptop has a case, along with my camera, which I haven't had in its case since I got back from Washington State. That was a packing issue.
And I finally did get out of the house today! I went to school to get help with my laptop. It was interesting being a student on Ubuntu/Linux and having someone explain it, instead of saying read the book! ![]()

I wanted to change my skin today. I can't. My PHP skinning script isn't working. My links script stopped working a few weeks ago. I don't know why. It's quite annoying. I didn't change a thing to my scripts. So, my skins are now turned off and we're all stuck with the default skin.
I'm too busy to figure out what happened. Besides, I've been thinking of ditching the skins and change the look of this site. Well, at least with the skins, it won't take more than a few key strokes change the look. It's not too big of a deal. It's just annoying. At least my e-mail script works.
Another grrring thing is we are missing a gerbil. Someone locked Harri in the room with Beth's gerbils this morning. All I know for sure is that it wasn't me! About 2:30, I went to Beth's room to look for a GameCube controller. It was then that I saw a destroyed cage with Harri in the room. Harri now hates me for the whipping I gave her for knocking the cage. I don't even know how she got in there! I found one gerbil; when my dad got home, we were able to capture the gerbil. However, the other one is not to be found. I'm hoping she's hiding in the room and will come out when she's hungry. We didn't find a body in the room. We hope that's a good sign.
I can't play the Wii at the moment because my brother has the controllers in the vehicle he's using. He's not home. I just want to play Tetris!
