Almost 5 Hours Without Power
March 16, 2008

Last night, the power went out at my house just after 10 PM. But not only did it go out at the house, it went out in 4 counties. Six transmission lines at the McIntosh Power Plant in nearby Rincon were cut. Nicki, back from Atlanta, was down in Richmond Hill at Cameron's place. As soon as the power went out, she called me to see if we had power. Once we confirmed with each other neither had power, we figured it was city wide. Beth confirmed for us it was city wide. She had been at work when the power went out. She got sent home and said she only saw one streetlight working the whole trip home. Of course, it was the busiest intersection in town that had a working light.

Due to the bad weather earlier in the day up around Atlanta, Matthew, Beth, and I took precautions. We put Ranger in the shed and brought Pikachu into the house from the trailer. We had a battery powered radio on to listen for weather warnings. We all stayed in the living room, together, in the dark. Around 12:10 AM, the radio station had a tornado warning go off, saying a tornado was possible spotted between Savannah and Richmond Hill and may be heading to the Windsor Forest and Isle of Hope areas of town. Just as this warning was finishing on the radio, the tornado sirens went off in our neighborhood. The whole family ran into the middle of the house, to the hall, and just sat in the hall until the tornado warning expired. Thank God we didn't get hit, but Effingham County did. *Frown*

Beth was scared about the weather, so we didn't get to bed until 2 AM. About 40 minutes later, our power came back on. I went back to my bed. I also turned on the WTOC weather channel and saw clear skies for the rest of the night. I made Beth look at the radar. That calmed her down enough to go back to sleep.

My uncle ended up calling my father to see if we were okay. He saw on the news this morning about the massive power outage down here. The news also covered in the report that most of the city's police were downtown trying to get the St. Patrick's Day celebrators home safely with the massive power outage.
