Sorry for the scan. My camera is still in the shop.
Last night was the School of Computing banquet. It was held at the banquet room of Johnny Harris. Actually, it's the old Shoney's building next door to Johnny Harris. Johnny Harris is so popular, that when that property opened, they bought it to give the main restaurant some more room. Dinner consisted of Southern fare. Dinner rolls, yellow rice, squash casserole, salad (both lettuce and pasta), steamed veggies, and I think pork. All I know that the meat was not chicken, it was white, and it was cut off a long roll of meat.
Desert came from a selection of four offered: cheesecake, pecan pie, lemon meringue pie, and a chocolate pudding/cake mix. I had the chocolate.
I was the first one to sit at my table. I was the only student at it. The presenter from Savannah Electric sat next to me. And then 2 of the 3 members of the Engineering Department, and their significant others, sat at the table. The engineers first spoke of their gardens and family, and then someone brought up RateMyProfessor.com. Later, the conversation shifted to engineering disasters.
The female engineering professor mentioned that many her students are interested in the Hyatt Regency hotel walkway collapse. I told them that when it comes to Engineering Disasters on the History Channel, I watch it. I also let them know that I watch the construction Modern Marvels, like the one on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. The engineers also started joking about Hoover Dam. This all occurred before and during dinner.
Around 8:30, the awards ceremony began. First, they had faculty and staff introductions. Then, recognition of graduates from CS and IT. Then, Upsilon Pi Epsilon inductions. My award came half way in the program. First, all CSEMS scholars present were asked to stand. They were past and current recipients. After that, the presenter, Chris, started with the Outstanding award. First, he mentioned there was a tie. Then he started on me. It sounded so sappy. Had he thrown in the bit about my mother dying in December, it could have been even sappier.
I was one of two IT students recognized that night. I ended up sharing the award with a graduate CS student.
After the ceremony, the faculty in the IT department congratulated me. The head of the department, made sure she got pictures of her award-winning students. She also told me to keep up the good work, that I'm on the right track and shouldn't have trouble finding a job in the area when I do graduate. After speaking with her, I ran into my Data professor. She hugged me and was so proud of me. We spent a good half hour, it seemed, talking about IT related stuff. She barely knows me, but she's pushing me and knows I'm a good student.
Everyone left at the banquet all left at 10:00. I got in my car, called my dad, who couldn't join me at the banquet, and let him know how it went. Once I got home, I got undressed, got into sleepwear, and stayed up to watch the Atlanta Braves game. After a 2 hour rain delay, I fell asleep in the 2nd inning. I awoke for a few minutes to hear that Marcus Giles was up for his second at-bat for the inning and no outs. I figured with that type of inning, the Braves won the game. I went back to bed.
Oh, I got the S&D project turned in. The only parts I parts I didn't get were parts of Milestone #6. The chick working on it was to e-mail it to the professor. I don't know if that happened, but the rest got turned in. Now, this week, my goal is to complete a paper on hurricanes for Oceanography. It's due Thursday. I can do it.
From what I heard at the banquet last night, S&D is the hardest class. I'm doing average in the class. Oh, that reminds me, I need to go get my book and test and do the make-up quiz. I have to get it done by 8 PM tonight. No sweat. In fact, I'll do it now. ![]()

Congratulations on your award. It sounds like you had a nice time at the banquet.
Forgive me for being so obtuse but what does CSEMS stand for?
Posted by: Geek's Girl at April 8, 2006 1:53 PMThanks.
CSEMS stands for Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarships. The money comes from a government grant.
Posted by: Shawn at April 8, 2006 4:04 PMOh my God! I saw Richard at that Hyatt in 2004. See the perspective the pic is from? I met Richard maybe 50 feet down that hallway. And I shop at Crown Center all the time. This is Hallmark's town.
I read the link you posted, and it doesn't sound like it looks anything like that now (there are no walkways accross the loby at all anymore), but still WOW! I'd never even heard about that accident, granted it was 2 years before I was born and I wasn't raised in Kansas City, but still WOW!
And the link from that article to the one about Kemper Arena. Another wow! I hadn't ever heard about that either. I've seen hockey games there. It's better known as the place where Owen Hart fell to his death.
Sorry, I got on a spiel about the engineering thing. Congrats on your award

Posted by: Shawn at April 9, 2006 9:16 PMYou know what's funny? I used to live near Tampa, too, and drove across the Sunshine Skyway all the time (of course, the new improved version). I guess my life is a tour of engineering disasters
