Remember when we said girl please don't goYes, I have some NKOTB songs in my iTunes collection. In fact, I was just listening to "Tonight" today. Oh, I remember my days in North Carolina, when the Nelson girls (Genevieve "Jenny", Jacqueline "Jackie", and Amanda), Becky Bird, Nicki, and I would sing NKOTB. I think that band was the biggest reason we were all friends. We each had our favorite New Kids. I was the Jon lover. He was older. He was normal, with a bit of rebellion (his earring). Later, I got into Jordan, too. Becky was also a Jon type of guy. We fought over him. Nicki was a Joe girl. It was all about the Joey-Joe for her. Jenny was a Donnie person. Amanda was all about the Jordan love. Jackie, my best friend of the Nelson girls, was into Danny. She was lucky, since the rest of us weren't into Danny. I always remember my mother's opinion on Danny: he's so ugly, he's cute. We girls would trade NKOTB stuff all the time. Jackie, she just got stuff, since no one wanted the Danny stickers and posters. Everyone one of us girls had at least one NKOTB doll. And of course, the doll was our favorite one.
And how I'd be loving you forever
Taught you 'bout hanging tough
As long as you got the right stuff
Didn't we girls, ohh, ooh
Didn't we girls, ahh, ahh…
Becky's older sister, Kitty, was a NKOTB fan, too. While the rest of us were from the ages of 7-12, she was 17. She didn't really hang out with us younger girls, unless we had something she wanted. For example, we all collected the trading cards. She was lacking #46, a Joe card, to complete her collection. I happened to have it. I ended up making a deal with her. I got all her repeats of cards I didn't have, all for that one card. I ended up filling out my card collection nicely from that trade. I even got repeats of the repeats, so Nicki could flesh out her collection.
My bedroom was covered in NKOTB posters. I ran out of wall space, so, I placed some posters on my window. If my parents or Grandmother could afford it, they'd get us NKOTB stuff. I think my Grandmother financed a majority of Nicki and my collections.
Why am I writing this down? Because, looking back now, those were good times. I was young and innocent. I wasn't corrupted by the Gulf War, boys that play with your heart, losing my grandparents, losing my mother, and whatever else life throws at you at that moment. I was carefree. I was a child full of life and promise. At times, I miss those days. To be 11 again!
When I went to Dahlonega, on the way up, one of the radio stations we had on during the trip played "Step By Step." Sheronda and Ashley started laughing. They were only about 5 when NKOTB was at its apex. Leslie and I started singing along. We also got into a discussion about them. It's amazing how much you can find out about a person these days just by the New Kid they adored when they were younger. The girls with a wild side were Donnie lovers. Jordan and Danny lovers are the girls now that have a balance of wild and good in them. Joe and Jon lovers are the girls that are calm and collective. Note, this is just a generalization, based on my experience. Before Leslie even told me her favorite New Kid, based on what all I know about her, I could tell she was a Joe girl.
So, for those that are old (or young) enough to remember their NKOTB love, which guy was your guy? I really want to know (even the RSS lurkers). There is no shame to be embarrassed by the NKOTB love you may once (or still) have. I know I was embarrassed by them as soon as they were out of vogue, but now, like I said, that was a time in my life that was full of life and promise. I have nothing to be ashamed of. Neither should you.

I LOVED NKOTB!!!! I still do! I am not ashamed! Michael totally makes fun of me, but screw him he is a dork anyways! I was a Joey-Joe girl! I had all of the dolls, but slept with the Joe! LOL! I had the bed stuff, posters all over my walls and ceiling. I had the shirts, pins all over my denim jacket and jeans! I was head over heels for NKOTB! I got to see them in concert. About 8 of us went. My friend Kristy's mom took us. We thought we were so cool! I remember when they come out on the stage, we were screaming as loud as we could and just squaling our dang eyes out! Oh to be back there again. Nothing to worry about but what t-shirt you are going to wear that day! LOL! I had all of their TAPES, and vhs tapes. I remember one year for Christmas we were decorating the tree and listening to their Christmas tape! Those were the days and some good times indeed! I know we are not the ONLY one's that feel this way....LOL!
Posted by: Seglenda at March 18, 2006 6:40 PMOh my God, it's like you read my mind. Literally, right after I put Alex to bed, before I headed downstairs for the computer, I was singing "Tonight" in my head and thinking about how when they sang "Tonight" during the choruses that it sounded like something completely different. lol
I guess I was just like you in the collecting department as well. I had all the trading cards (we were lucky/cursed enough to live next to a convenience store, so as soon as my sis or I got any cash, we'd run right down the driveway lol), we had all the video concerts, we had all the albums on tape, we had dolls, we had those HUGE pins you could prop up like a frame, and oh so much more crap... we even ran up like $600 in phone calls to the NKOTB fan club 1-900 number and each got a spiffy NKOTB beach towel and plastic drinking mug. Oh, was my Poppy pissed about that!!!
One time, we got all our friends together for a party to celebrate Jordan's birthday (must have read the date in one of those fan club books). We had Entenmanns’s cupcakes and Sprite. lol!!!!!
I switched quite frequently as to which guy I liked. I liked Joey because he was the youngest, and I was the youngest out of our group of friends. I liked Jon, too. I can still remember from one of the concert videos how Donny described him as "suave, debonair, and also very shy." (I watched that tape at least once a day every day for months) My grandmother got a kick out of that, and tried to explain to me how you could never be debonair & shy. I was 6 years old! Her point was totally lost on me. When I saw him years later on Oprah talking about his agorophobia or whatever, I looked back on Donny's quote with quite a different view.
They were good times. Great times. Even though when I think about how much money I spent on that band it makes me physically ill. ;)
Posted by: Liz at March 18, 2006 10:18 PMwow... if I look back I can conjure the same sort of entry, we had a "tight knit group" based mostly around our infatuation with NKOTB...
I was all about Joey, still would be...
as was my still close pal Sara...
just the other night I saw one of the Jordan girls, as we got together to organize our class reunion! The same girl, who early in high school, once we were no longer tight, ran into me and we shared a quick/quiet bonding moment over the final release of the album actually under the NKOTB name vs. the completion of the acronym...
wow!
praise God for ipods, and the ability to "hide" the compulsion, yet still have it at your finger tips for those moments in the car when "Please Don't Go Girl!" is really the only option!
Posted by: amancay at March 19, 2006 3:42 AMI was hoping to get more replies on this topic. This is something most girls my generation can relate to! I hope more people comment come Monday morning and people are back to work and school.
I amazed there is no NKOTB personality quiz online.
As soon as I hit my 20s, when a New Kids song came on the radio, we'd turn it up. Even my mother would sing the songs. She knew all the lyrics based on how many times we listened to the albums. I started my Sunday mornings with Hangin' Tough and Step By Step as a 12-year-old.
I wonder what did happy to the Nelson girls and Becky. Last I heard, the Nelsons moved to Pensacola, FL. Becky went home to Clinton, IA
Posted by: Shawn at March 19, 2006 2:46 PMWowser, your the 3rd person this week I've heard talk about NKOTB and particularly listened to "Tonight." Is it a sign? I heard 2 out of them were ok with a reuinion. Strangely those two were Jon and Jordan lol. Joey only would if everyone else would. And Danny and Donny said Hell no. Man that was soooo long ago. Holy god I was in love with them 18 yrs ago! Now I feel Old. I touched Jordans pinky finger 2 yrs ago on St. Patricks Day. Weee...times have changed. I was into Jordan first then Joeymac. Then I figured If I moved to Utah I could have them both. Joe is still hot! I think my inner teenie misses the boybands
ROFL WOW, lol i was just talking to betsy about New Kids last week and the main song i keept talking about was "Tonight" haha, i was in 3rd grade when i fell in love with Joey. i stayed a fan of theres untill they called it quits. i'm now 24 lol my have the years gone by fast. I had a Joey doll the phone, all the albums pitctures poster traiding cards lol wow.
Jon was my fav back in the day. Joey had a piece of my heart too, but Danny and Donnie kept me happy moreso.
I'm still a fan of Danny, Donnie, and Joe's and not so much of Mr. Sleaze. Jon will always be my fav though.
Posted by: Tamm at March 20, 2006 11:22 AMMr. Sleeze!
As I was talking to Betsy and a few others the other day, we kept talking about Jordan and how he needs an attitude adjustment.
I was totally in love with Jordan. My group of friends then were all obsessed with NKOTB. I remember going to their concert when i was 12 & like you my room was covered with pictures of them. Those were the days, when life was easy & fun & you had nothing to worry about. After seeing Jordan on the Surreal Life my opinion of him totally changed. He's Mr. Sleazy for sure!!
