I Believe I May Have A Job!
July 9, 2004

*Thumb Up* This afternoon, I had an appointment with the director of the Writing Center. From the way she was talking, it sounded like I had the job as soon as my Civ. I professor recommended me. The hours work with my school schedule and on the 13th, all the employees of the center will get together and plan for the fall. The pay for the job is $1.85 less than what I made for my old job but at this point, it doesn't matter to me. A little bit of money is better than no money at all. The director also told me of a conferences of Writing Center employees that Armstrong has a track record of attending. She named off a few of the other schools that have a track record similar to Armstrong and Georgia Tech was one of them.

This meeting was right after Swimming, so I had to shower at the school today to make myself look nice for today's interview. Swimming class was ok. I'll be getting a B out of it. The good news is it doesn't count against HOPE. I've given that class my all but I resigned myself to the fact when I start it I might be able to get only a B since I was never athletic. I should be getting As in my history courses, however.

Speaking of history, we had a funny thing occur in Ethics. We get into groups to discuss the previous night's reading and write our names and answer on an index card when we do this. Last night, no one in my group did so. I skimmed over the last article and concluded that the answer to today's question, "Who does William Lloyd Garrison credit for the end of slavery?", was Garrison himself. Since the cards are for discussion ice breaking and attendance records only, not for a grade, we put down Garrison as the answer. The professor was thrilled to see that the first card she read was correct. *EEK!* It was my group's card! We were amazed we guessed correctly! *Laughing* She read a passage from another article we were to read that hinted at the answer.

Tomorrow, I have the required Regent's test. In Georgia, you have to take it before you 45th hour of credit. I'll be having 34 be next month, so I figured I might as well take it now. After it, I might be heading to Effingham County to join my mother in a visit of an old friend.

Nothing else much from me at the moment. Ok, maybe a remark that it's HOT here!

Um, call me ignorant, but what's a Regent's test? Is it like those tests in grade school where they make sure you learned what you should have learned?

The Regents' test (oops, I misplaced the apostophe! :eek is a test of reading and writing skills. The state wants to know its students are literate. I'm exempt from the reading section of the test. I just have to take the writing section. The writing section is an essay and they score it on a scale from 1-4, with 1 being a failing paper and 2 & up being a passing score. I had to write those type of papers since 7th grade.

Ah, I remember doing something like that in high school. But why would they want to give the test to college students? (One would assume you would have to be literate to get into college in the first place.)

Honestly, I don't know. All I can assume is that the State of Georgia knows that many people are not functionally literate and are just getting out of school by the seat of their pants. Many teachers just don't care anymore, it seems.

Back when my sister, Beth, was in 5th grade, she marveled at fact her teacher did use proper grammar. It would amaze you how many teachers don't do so. She was sad to see her teacher go later that year.
