I had my first swimming class today. Boy am I rusty in my swimming skills! I have trouble breathing correctly. We intermediate swimmers had to assist the beginners half the class. However it was fun. Made me flashback to my days in North Carolina when we would swim nearly everyday during the summer. One of the girls in my swimming class is my age. Seems we were in History 1100 last semester. She remembered me as the one that knew all the answers and she called herself the one that laughed at all the professors' jokes. She joked that you had to be older to get the professors' jokes since the teenagers just couldn't get them. ![]()
American history class was ok. I think a girl in that class was in my English 1101 class two years ago. I wasn't as mouthy as I was the first two days. Well, except to mention that I saw something about railroads and buffalo killings on the History Channel a couple of nights ago as he was discussing that.

Between History and Ethics, I asked my History professor for a recommendation for the Writing Center job. He asked that I drop a copy in his mailbox. Then, I stopped by my Civ. I professor's office. She was thrilled to hear I inquired about the job and then finally asked the question: was I majoring in history. I told her the truth. I'm majoring in IT but probably will get a history minor. She told me to reverse them.
And that's my quagmire.
Everyone assumes I'm a history major and when I admit I'm not, they tell me I should. Even my own parents tell me this. However, I doubt there are many position I'd like to get with a history degree. I also enjoy computers and figure I have a better chance of getting a job in the technology sector. I just don't know what to do.
In Ethics class, we spent a bit on Thomas Jefferson. I couldn't help but laugh while reading this document he wrote about the races not interfering and knowing now that he and Sally Hemmings were husband and wife in all but the name of the law. The professor also brought up a thing about the man, Judge James Moore Wayne, that lived in the Juliette Gordon Low home before her family did. I spoke up I knew his last name when I blurted it out. The class is meant to be a discussion class but very little discussion so far. After the quick discussion, we watched the beginnings of Jefferson In Paris. From what I saw and what the professor mentioned in class, sounded like Patsy Jefferson has an Electra complex and jealous of her dear Aunt Sally.
That was my day so far. Back to being a bum for the weekend.
No, not really. I do have to work on the Writing Center application.

Do the major that you want....job prospects are important, but not everything. both of my parents have history degrees, and are teachers. I have a strong interest in history just from growing up with them.
I did chemical engineering in part due to job prospects and now I'm back in school to get a degree in what I really want. Certainly having the IT degree as at least a minor will be helpful, but it comes down to doing what you want. If you love it, you'll find a way to make it work.

I agree with Chewie.. If you want IT then go for IT. Don't let people badger you into a major you don't want. It's your time and your money(kinda) going for this education. Do what YOU want.
Posted by: Dragon at June 5, 2004 4:46 AMDefinitely go after what you want. People have the tendency to think that they know you better than yourself or know what's "good for you" but most of the time, that's not true.
This reminds me of when I made my decision to go to grad school and everyone started asking me why I didn't apply to med school (sometimes people still ask me that). On the technical side, I could probably memorize all the body parts and diseases and dissect a cadaver as well as anyone else, but being a medical doctor is also a lot more limiting. And besides, my personality is just a bad fit for the job.
Posted by: sya at June 5, 2004 9:30 AMI spoke to my mother last night and she said the same. I figured I could also go back to school and get degrees in history and computer science and be a game developer.
I don't know. I just figure that there are more opportunities for me in IT. I plan on getting a minor in history.
And Sya, I started to think about Neela on ER when you mentioned the not going to medical school. on the show, she went to medical school because it was excepted of her. However, she felt more comfortable in the labs. I don't blame you for doing what you want.
