Something Fishy In The Referrals?
December 22, 2003

Is it just me or is anyone else with a blog getting hit with referrals to sites like http://journals.starprose.com/mandy (originating from mich.net) or http://journals.starprose.com/skilled360 (originating from bess.net)? These hits are going for one thing and one thing only. They aren't grabbing all of my refer system's page. They are using a HEAD command to grab the page and I guess leave their mark.

Of the two listed above, they do have entries but they are at least 6 months ago. In the blog world, that's considered an abandoned blog.

Well, a few minutes ago, I was going through my referrals and saw a Google query for Referrer Advertising. I checked it out but I don't see my site there.

However, I see as the #1 query this: "Referrer Advertising." I know, no-brainer. *Sigh* And what URL is that? http://ads.starprose.com/referrer/. Is this related to those phantom journals above? I wouldn't be surprised.

Well, looks like I'm going to be tweaking my referal system to be in a new directory. I'm not going to play this game. If you want to advertise on my site, you better PAY me, not steal bandwidth from me. *Angry* It's a shame I can't enjoy what I'd like to enjoy because of other people thinking they have a right to profit off my pleasure and work and not pay me. *Shake Head*

I know, this subject was huge last month when phantom blogs were spaming to get people to look at "paur*NAH*gru*fic" sites. Maybe this is a new twist on that.

My full server log is too big for me to read now but I checked my quick server log and I haven't gotten a hit from them since 1:30 AM, which is far back as it went at the time. I hope my little trick will deter them since they won't be able to find the exact page they seek. If I see them hit where I changed it, I'll just change it again.

Have you been getting hit by socksproxy.de, too? They were hitting me as much as those Starprose journals.

I posted a simliar message like this about Starprose on two forums but everyone that has replied has said they haven't been hit by it.

If you do a Google search for Starprose journals, you get nothing but a bunch of referral logs.
