Is My Name Cool?
December 13, 2003

Don't ask me how, but as I was throwing some clothes into the washer this morning, "Lorgan" popped into my mind. *Crazy* Back in my high school senior history class one day, Logan was filling out some paperwork for college. For some reason, that paperwork stated his first name was Lorgan and he was having a fit over it not being his name. I told him at least he was lucky it was close to his name and his last name was correct on the paperwork. I told him over the summer, I got something from a college addressed to "Sharon LaHa." Excuse me, that's not my name at all! I could understand the LaHa part but Sharon? No way do I print my name such that it looks like Sharon! I was quite offended by it when I got it. I told him if anyone should be offended, it should be me and not him.

Why am I even bringing up this story? Well, it's just an example of name confusion that has happened to me other the years.

The other day, before the final test, I was talking to another classmate. I mentioned my name and she said "That's a cool name." Over the years, a lot a people tell my name is cool. Then why don't I ever feel that way? Why can't learn to appreciate my name? *Sigh*

I always thought it was cool. Better than growing up with the most common female middle name, the 26 most common female first name, and something like the 43 most common last name. Just plain common, I am

I feel the same way about my name. Everyone misspells it and sometimes I get called Mr. GRR.

Sometimes misspellings are just an honest mistake, but sometimes I get the nagging feeling that whoever is typing out all those names have no imagination. So when they see a name that doesn't look "right" they "correct" it to something they feel comfortable with. (Or maybe it's just me and my paranoia speaking.)

yeah? well try this one on for size...

"Mitzfwah" "Mishbah" "Mezpah" "Mitzvah" "Misbafaha" and last but not least,
"Missy"

...and don't even get me started on my last name, though I think
"Mitzfwah Fajimmy" was a classic. I remember my entire government class screaming my name properly at the sub who butchered my name beyond comprehension.

oh and my middle name? Here's a hint: It sounds neither like "Karen" nor like "Irene with a K in front" It's Kyrene...pronounced Keerehn

Sya, I don't think it was paranoia in the case of "Sharon." "Lorgan" could have been a slip but I still can't see "Sharon."

R, your name is a nice name, too. I was in a class with a girl with the same name. However, I think hers was spelled another way but it was the same name.

Chewie, got your Christmas card today! Oh, and believe it or not, I wanted a simple name when I was younger. I had a hang up on the name "Sally."

And Misbah, I understand the "Mishbah" one. I guess our minds are just trained to place the "S" with the "H"

Cool - I got your Christmas card today, too

My mother almost named me Winter (as the first day is my birthday most years)....I always wished she had. And can you believe that Rebecca is often spelled incorrectly - like "Rebbecca" and such.

I HATE it when people get my name wronge! I also get mail addressed to LaHa! That is funny, I thought we were the only one's! People are always saying and writing my name wronge! I got some mail with my name spelled SeGlenda..that was a first! Oh well, Shawn is a great name!

I rather spell a standard Rebecca and get a unique one wrong than spell is a non-standard way. Most Rebeccas I have encountered spell it that way. Winter is a nice name. I think there was a girl by that name in my high school. I know for sure we had a January!

Seglenda, my parents claim I probably get the LaHa since my little T's look like one capital H. However, I don't see what's so wrong with our last name. People make a mountain out of a molehill when it comes to it. I'd be rich for every time I've heard someone butcher it.

I still think it sucks to be called LaHa! I wonder what nationality that would be? LOL! It probly is the two t's together. Oh well, haveing your name spelled wronge still sucks! smooch!
