World Mental Health Day
October 10, 2003

Nicole posted about it as a reminder. Today is World Mental Health Day.

There was a booth at the school the other day about mental health that was done by the psychology department. There was a petition to keep Georgia Regional Hospital open. I made sure I signed it. Maybe had the state not jumped the gun on the site in Pooler before DaimlerChrysler said no, it might have the funds for other projects, like the mental health of our residents.

Also at the booth, I made sure I picked this little paper up:

Tips For Managing Your Stress

There are a variety of ways to deal with unhealthy stress in your life. Below are some tips that can be adapted to a variety of situations
  • Manage Your Time Effectively - Keep a to do list or daily planner and make sure to include ime for yourself and time for stress reduction activities
  • Get Some Exercise - Regular physical activity is one of the best ways to deal with stress. It releases endorphins and give you a natural high.
  • Avoid Using Drugs of Alcohol To Deal With Your Stress - These things will only mask the symptoms of stress and when you stop using them, the stress will return.
  • Take A Break - Schedule several short breaks throughout the day to help minimize your stress.
  • Eat Healthy Foods - Aoid foods high in fat, sugar, and sodium. If you are going to be out all day, make sure to pack healthy snacks and don't skip meals because this will lower your energy levels.
  • Practice Daily Relaxation Exercises - Good ones include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization (imaging a relaxing scene).
  • Think Positive And Learn To Control Worry - Instead of focusing on negative thoughts, focus on the positive things in your life and say to yourself at least one positive thought each day. Don't waste your time worrying about things you cant' change or always planning for the worst.
  • Know When You Need Help And Get It - Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. There are many resources available to help students deal with stress and problems, so take advantage or them.
  • Learn to Say NO- Don't feel guilty when you have to tell others no. Taking on additional projects or work for others when you are busy will only cause you more stress.
  • Put Stressful Situations In Perspective - Will it matter a month from now? What about a year from now?
  • Get Enough Sleep - Most people need between 6-9 hours, but most people give up sleep when they're under stress to finish more work.
Now, only to live by this paper. *Smile* Easier said than done.

You left out running around naked and screaming. Why is everyone looking at me like that?

I think I need some of those relaxation exercises.

I don't know about the nakedness but I can agree with the screaming at times.

Not a problem at all to post them

As for relaxaion exercises, I need to do some of the physical ones. Daydreaming in shower just isn't cutting it anymore.

Jeremy....is an ass.

I just don't understand where he gets off!! Go see the Let's Talk section, under the "what song would you record" thread. What do you think Jeremy said?

grrr

anyway...happier thoughts...I'm off to Target and Jo Ann Fabrics so i can get stuff for my costume this year. Trish knows. I'd tell you here but people apparently do thearches on my comments and someone is bound to nab my idea...not that it's especially original but still... ;)

Misbah, e-mail it to me! As for Jeremy, I saw it and had to bite my tongue. Makes you want to sing "You're So Vain," doesn't it?

I redesigned again...in support of World Mental Health - keeps me sane to redesign so often

Hey, Chewie, that's a good thing. I wouldn't be so upset in working a fanlisting database for my sister if I could use a Windows system. I'm about to go to another room and see if my computer in 1997 (in other words SLOW) will help me better than Linux since I'm lost.
