I am a military brat but I'm also a southern girl at heart. I was born in the South and have spent most of my years in the South.
Tonight, I have been surfing over the Turner South website. The end of the Atlanta Braves TV season is airing on Turner South so I've been watching it lately. I've also caught a few others shows on it. Since I've been watching it, I might as well read what the network has to offer.
I'm at the story about MoonPie. As soon as I started reading it, I wanted one. I haven't had one in years.
When I was younger, my family would dine at Po Folks. It was a cool little restaurant that was all about Southern cooking. You didn't have Coke to drink while eating there. You had RC Cola in Ball Jars for your glasses. Royal Crown/RC Cola signs decorated the place. I would usually have a kids' shrimp dinner. At the cashier counter, they would sell MoonPies. Some days, after dinner, Nicki and I would want a MoonPie and get one. We didn't get them every time we dine there. Most of the time, we never did finish them.
The last times I've eaten at a Po Folks were in 1991 at a Nashville location a few times that summer and 1995 at a Jacksonville location. Sadly, the Po Folks in Augusta and Nashville closed. The one in Savannah was closed when we moved here and I believe the one in Jacksonville has closed, too. I miss the place. It was good. It was another charm of Southern life.

I think Po folks is mostly gone everywhere.
You can get moonpies at Wal-mart...I know, I eat them all the time. The vanilla ones are my favorites, and they're especially good if you microwave them for about 3-4 seconds. You can get the mini-versions, too - so you can finish them
They have a few in Florida, but not close enough to travel for dinner and back. But, next time I'm in the Tampa Bay area, I might go eat at the one in St. Petersburg.
Posted by: Shawn at September 20, 2003 9:19 PMThe last time I ate at a Po Folks was in 1979, in Clarksville, Tennessee. Dad was stationed at Fort Campbell.
I remember we never went back there because it was too expensive.
Posted by: Chad at September 21, 2003 2:23 AMThere's one down the street from my house in Warner Robins, still. My mom never took us there because she says she doesn't like "southern" food, but we ate that stuff all the time!

Posted by: Laura at September 21, 2003 3:13 AMAh, moonpies. They remind me of mooncakes. Both of them extremely rich and artery clogging. I remember seeing PoFolks restaurants but I've never been to one.
Posted by: sya at September 21, 2003 9:46 AMThe funniest thing about the PoFolks thing last night was I brought it up to my mother and she had thought about it the night before!
We went to the website to reminisce about our PoFolks dinning days. My mother was wondering about the GA locations seeing on the site they had one here and I told her it was over in Warner Robbins.
You should try it, Laura, if you haven't.
Chad, I'm too young to remember the prices. I was only 16 the last time I did eat there but my Grandma paid for the meal. By that time in life, I usually tried to order the cheapest meal I would eat.
Sya, the PoFolks I remember dining at in Nashville was right off of Murfreesboro Road and Thompson Lane, just about cattycornered to Crescent Plaza. We were staying with my Grandmother at the time and that was on her side of town.
Posted by: Shawn at September 21, 2003 10:51 AMI don't remember the prices either. I just remember Ma and Pa (gotta keep the Po Folks theme going for this conversation) carping about them rather hilariously all the way through dinner and on home.
Posted by: Chad at September 21, 2003 5:50 PMOn a similar note, ever eat at a Lum's? Do they still have those?
Posted by: Chad at September 21, 2003 5:53 PMI find it amusing that Po Folks was expensive....my parents said that, too. I don't remember, either, but my parents said they could make the exact same thing at home better and for less money.
Posted by: Chewie at September 22, 2003 7:28 AMWhere the closed Po Folks was located when we moved her is now that hotel that's across from Twelve Oaks.
