Strong Enough for
December 31, 2002

Blame Tamm for this post's title. She has a link to the The Advertising Slogan Generator.

I'm sitting here listening to my Savage Garden album and can't help but think back to the summer of 1997. Specifically July 25, 1997. My family was going to Atlanta because the next night, there would be a Richard Marx concert at Chastain Park. As we were on I-285 approaching our hotel for the weekend, "To The Moon And Back" came on Star 94. At the time, Nicki was into Savage Garden at that time and she crawls across the van and turns the radio up.

I know on a summer afternoon, the interstates in Atlanta happen to be places you really don't want to be. Frankly, I don't like being on them, either. But I find myself some days longing to be on an Atlanta interstate in the blazing summer. After all, I like the car having A/C so I don't have to suffer in the heat. But this is just one memory that sums up summer for me.

Later in the summer of 1997, my family went to Atlanta for my Georgia Tech orientation, when I was still planning on go to school there. My father was working in Columbia, SC at the time but would drive over to Atlanta to do the orientation with me. My mother and the rest of my siblings were there to watch the Sunburst pagaent that weekend that we knew a contestant in.

In some ways, I had a good time at the orientation, but to be honest, I was not happy. I was my shy self and was too afraid to open up to anyone to talk to. I did run into a girl I was in 9th Comp/Lit and sat with her for a lunch. Then, I sat with another girl from high school when there was a comedian performing for the students at the orientation. I didn't really talk with them, I just sat there. That's why when I ran into to Melanie at Media Play, I suprised myself. I still connected to the 18-year-old I was at orientation than the 24-year-old at Media Play.

Okay, now I'm rambling. Funny how something triggers a memory and you have to discuss it.
