1. What myths and stereotypes really bother you? Why do they bother you? Do people frequently use them to describe you? I don't know if people use sterotypes on me and I really don't care. As for stereotypes that bother me, most of them, do. I don't like people thinking I'm a stupid hick because I just happen to be from Georgia. I might have an accent but having an accent doesn't equate being stupid. I've met some pretty stupid people from the North.
2. What myths and stereotypes do you use in reference to others? Do you think there is some truth in them? I know stereotypes are wrong and try to ignore them. But there is one stereotype I can't help but only because I have experienced it. Why don't little black girls flush the toliet? It's not that hard! Now, I know little white girls may not flush, too, and there are little black girls that do flush, but odds are at a crowded bathroom, and the only toliet that wasn't flush, it was a little black girl that walked out of the stall! Or so it happens to me! And it's not just a pee that happens to be in the toliet. Now adults of all races aren't a problem, just the one group above.
3. What myths and stereotypes have made you afraid of certain people? Which ones have brought you closer to people? I'm not usually afraid of people except old men that look like they are vagabons or motorcycle gang members. My mother was scared of them and passed the fear onto me. Besides, they really are CREEPY round me, for the most part. I don't think stereotypes have brought me closer to people except maybe geeks because geeks are smart and can be fun.
4. What if all of the myths and stereotypes were reversed? For example, if people started to move out of a certain area because too many "white people" lived there... What would our culture look like? (Interpret this question any way you want- you can even write a story if you're inspired!!)I read in Newsweek a couple of years ago about a community in Bowie, MD. It was originally designed for black people and whites started moving in! There's a neighborhood here in Savannah that had the same thing happen. When I lived in Augusta, most of the neighbors on Morgan Road were black. But it was a nice neighborhood and we moved in when it was new. People shouldn't move out because another race moves in. People move out because of fear of the other race. We're all human. Shouldn't we just live by that? As for the question, I don't our culture would be too much different from what it is now.
5. Do I have to go to work today? Why? ;)Yes, because you need the money. Besides, I had to go into work today. And so far, my day has been nothing but J whining about her work load and that she wished she could get cable for her computer. Maybe if she'd listen to me and reboot for f----ng computer, it wouldn't be as slow as see whines about! But no, it's so much easier to fuss about it.
1. You can mold any type of government you would like for the nation you are about to rule. Describe the form of your government, and your style of ruling. I like a democracy, but I don't like how the average Joe in the U.S. doesn't really matter. Only the big rich people.
2. You have just been given control of a small nation with a stable economy, friendly international relations, internal peace and prosperity, no homelessness or illiteracy, a hardworking yet relaxed people, and a culture which is studious, developed and leisurely. All in all, your country and people want for nothing. What are your first three official actions? Celebrating "National Reading Day" or establishing one, maybe set up something similar to the Peace Corp, and for the heck of it, start a space program.
3. Now your nation has the opposite problem - everything is going wrong. Industry, agricultural and international economy have all ground to a halt. The country is in imminant danger of brutal invasion by its neighbors. The people are labouring beyond

Ah, "memes," that's the term for what I do every week! (What the heck does it mean!?)
Interestingly, there is this horrible stereotype that "everyone from the South is racist." I don't know if you had to confront that, but it's awful and also terribly inaccurate. It seems like some folks like to "forget" how the North treated black people after the war.
You're definately correct- Ignorance knows no accent, color, or religion. If you're ignorant, you're ignorant. I actually had many fortunate humbling experiences- when I was dating a man from Alabama and I would visit him, I would get odd looks or smiles because of my accent (not only is it NORTHERN but it is BOSTONIAN!) It's really humbling to be "in the minority."
Well, I'm getting to the point where I'm just rambling!
Do you think I should move the Wednesday Whine to Sunday?
Posted by: Eve at May 8, 2002 1:28 PMI wish I knew what "meme" meant, too. Odd word, isn't it? I confront the racist stereotype all the time. "Can't we all just get along?"
As for moving the Whine, I'm fine for either day. I don't like doing memes on the weekend but I will just for you. :-)
