Wednesday Whine

1. Do you feel the most comfortable with Western/conventional medicine, or do you look for alternative treatments for various illnesses? Why? Conventional medicine is fine with me. If God didn't want us to use them, we would have never discovered them.

2. Do you feel that everyone is responsible for the children in our society (aka "It Takes A Village") or do you feel that it is the sole responsibility of the parent(s) who brings the child into the world? Why? Most responsibility should be on the parents but if teachers and other people that have devoted their lives to industries devoted to children are just as responsible. My life could have been better, maybe, if one teacher had called and wonder what was wrong with me when I was a senior in high school. Beth's chorus teacher gets on her when she misses school. She does that because she cares. I'm jealous of that.

3. As a society, we owe a huge debt to the Native Americans (for pushing them off their land and onto reservations) and to African Americans (because of slavery.) Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not? If you do agree with this statement, do you have any thoughts on how we can go about making reparations? This is a sticky question. Sure to inflame some people. As much as something should be done to honor and repay the Native Americans and Blacks, I don't believe in reparations. It's not my fault that maybe some one earlier in the family line decided to kick a Native off the land or own a slave. I never asked to be born as a decendant of that person. Why should I pay for their mistakes? And for today, we're a different society than the one in the past. I can't control how much money a person is born into but everyone has an equal chance to succeed. In some ways, minorities now have a better chance to succeed than your average middle-class white person.

I know, it sounds like I could be racist but I'm far from it. I believe if we quit crying over the past that we of today had no way of controlling, we could be a better society today. Didn't all Martin Luther King, Jr. want was a society where we're all equal? That's all I want, too.

Maybe that's why I love baseball. Everyone there isn't judged on the color of their skin. They're judged on the talent they possess.

4. Do you think that old laws (such as, in Massachusetts, there is still a law against pre-marital sex) need to be overturned even if they are not enforced? Why or why not? Some of them do need to be thrown out. Some of the laws are plain ole stupid. http://www.dumblaws.com/states/georgia.html Good Old Georgia have a few of them. Jonesboro's "Oh Boy" law was helpful in the day it was created but is no longer needed. Give me a break!

5. Whine. I'll listen!! I'll whine later.
