#Cityclub

     August 21, 2002

As I was trying to go to bed tonight, a single phrase hit me, "OSG!" Short for "One_Sweet_Guy," he happened to be an IRC pal from when I first got on IRC.

When I was 18/19, I loved Internet Relay Chat. I was first introduced to it by the old DALnet chats Repeat Offenders had once upon a time. During my year off from college, I would get on during the day to find new friends. Laura, in her time off, would join me in the friendly confines of IRC.

We settled in a channel called #chatterz. I was Buttercat (in honor of my cat, Butterball. I blanked out on a name!) and Laura was Angelia18. Soon, we got to know some of the chatters in this channel.

OSG was a 26-year-old guy that backed up his IRC and all related files on forty floppies. Kola was a cool chick from South Africa who later moved to L.A. Brad, a guy a year older than me, whose IRC nick I can't remember, was from Newfoundland. Hyperion was the leader of the pack. Arcangel, a Quebecois, was very quite but had a picture that made you wonder "Why would that good looking guy send me that photo?" We had plenty of memorable souls in #chatterz.

It seemed the founder of #chatterz had a war of words with Hyperion. Most of us who felt Hyperion was our leader, left #chatterz for a new room, #cityclub. We were going to make it the newest, best channel on DALnet.

I agreed to do the website. With a rask of creating a channel sit and remnantsof my first website, I created a website, which is still partly alive today on my current site. I was going to make it a cool site, with biographies of the gang from #cityclub, photos, a webring to link all our personal sites, and have out own message board. It is a shame the whole website did not happen as I planned.

Over a year, #cityclub collasped. We all found different activites online and offline to do. Hyperion had a girlfriend, Laura and I had college, Brad had his college, too and Kola moved.

But it is not as if I did not have fun with the #cityclubers. A few of us girls were having a pity party on being single to make us feel better one day. I wrote Crushes -- Oh The Pain for this pity party. We would have late night fun amongst the college age #cityclubers. We would have fun kicking and banning "Viper_14" because he was a jerk and we felt he deserved it.

As of August 2002, the only person from #cityclub I still speak to is Laura. We knew each other prior to IRC and have other reasons to stay in touch. But I stop and think about the others from #cityclub How is my Brazilian friend that wanted me to send out a message in a bottle? Did Kola go back to South Africa? How is Brad in Newfoundland? How is everyone else I have not mentioned? We may not be in touch bit I still care for them and wish them all the best.
